Thrifty Tips

Check out these 5 thrifty-tips to save money.

1. Shower with a bucket.

Shower with a bucket to catch water for plants .

You can easily shower while catching water to reuse on plants. Here’s how to do it cleanly and safely:

🚿🌱 How to Shower and Reuse the Water for Plants

1. Use a Clean Bucket or Tub

  • Place a clean bucket, washing-up bowl, or large tub in the shower tray.

  • Make sure it’s free from chemicals (no cleaners or detergents).

2. Catch the “Cold Start” Water

  • The best water to reuse is the clean, cold water that runs before the shower heats up.

  • This water is perfect for:

    • Houseplants

    • Garden plants

    • Outdoor planters

💡 Tip: A typical shower can waste 5–10 litres waiting for hot water.

3. Reuse Lightly Soapy Water (Optional)

You can use shower water after washing, only if:

  • You use mild, biodegradable soap/shampoo

  • No bleach, disinfectants, or strong fragrances

Safe for:

  • Lawns

  • Trees

  • Shrubs

Avoid using on:

  • Vegetables or herbs

  • Sensitive plants

2. Automate savings.

Set up a standing order to transfer a small amount weekly.

3. Cut shampoo bottles in half to get the last bits

Why It Works

  • Shampoo and conditioner bottles often trap 10–20% of product that’s hard to squeeze out.

  • Cutting the bottle lets you access every last drop, saving money and reducing waste.

How to Do It Safely

  1. Choose the right bottle

    • Works best with rigid plastic bottles, not soft squeeze bottles.

  2. Clean your work area

    • Lay down a towel or cutting board to avoid spills.

  3. Cut the bottle

    • Use strong scissors or a craft knife carefully.

    • Cut horizontally across the middle or slightly above the bottom for easier access.

  4. Scoop out the product

    • Use a small spatula, spoon, or clean fingers to get all the shampoo or conditioner.

  5. Store leftovers

    • Transfer to a smaller container or reuse the bottom half of the bottle.

  6. Recycle the bottle

    • Once empty, rinse and recycle the plastic if possible.

Extra Tips

  • You can do the same for body wash, lotion, and liquid soap.

  • Combine almost-empty bottles to create a new “last bits” bottle.

  • Keep a small silicone spatula in your bathroom; it makes scooping easier.

Bonus: This tip can save $10–$20 per year per household if done consistently.

4. Make your savings work harder.

Use a high-yield savings account.

5.

Treat Savings Like a Monthly Bill.

Pay your savings first—automatically—just like rent or utilities.

Then live on the rest.
