Internation Human Rights Seminar 2025

The Wisdom Trust Human Rights Seminar 2025 was held at The House Of Lords.  Here, we outline the central themes, discussions and outcomes from that year’s event. It examined global human rights pressures, areas of emerging progress and the perspectives shared by speakers and delegates. The page aims to deepen understanding and motivate action that strengthens dignity, fairness and justice worldwide.

The Wisdom Trust International Human Rights Seminar 2025 was held on Thursday November 27th 2025, this time at The House of Lords in London, hosted by Lord Brennan KC.

Over the course of four enthralling hours, we were privileged to hear 20 amazing speakers from 12 different countries.

The title of the seminar was:-

“Human Rights & Democracy – Foundations For A Just And Equal Society.”

And the discussions continued long after the last group photos had been snapped in the magnificent Westminster Hall.  As a result we hope to announce some brilliant new initiatives in 2026.

So watch this space!

Thanks to everyone who took part.  It was a wonderful event.

Resolution on Combating the Weaponization of Censorship and Upholding Freedom of Expression-2025

Adopted by the Wisdom Institute of Democracy and Human Rights

Held in the House of Lords, London

Preamble

Recalling the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—particularly Article 19, which enshrines the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including the ability to seek, receive, and impart information across all media and without frontiers;

Recognizing that open access to information, free expression, and unrestricted public debate constitute the foundation of democratic governance, essential for transparency, accountability, the prevention of corruption, and the safeguarding of all other human rights;

Deeply Concerned by the accelerating global trend, outlined in the accompanying report, in which censorship is increasingly deployed as a deliberate instrument of power—weaponized under claims of “national security,” “public order,” or “stability”—to suppress legitimate dissent, manipulate narratives, and distort public understanding;

Alarmed by the systematic repression of the Palestinian narrative through selective content moderation, targeted harassment of journalists, the disruption of documentation efforts, and the use of violence on the ground—practices that risk becoming a global blueprint for the normalization of weaponized censorship;

Further Noting the chilling effect observed in countries including India, Pakistan, Egypt, China, Russia, and Turkey, where tools such as internet shutdowns, restrictive digital legislation, and institutionalized blocking of independent media and human rights platforms have sharply constricted civic space;

Acknowledging the increasing complicity of major social media companies whose opaque, inconsistent, or biased moderation practices often facilitate the suppression of marginalized voices and impede critical reporting on human rights violations;

Operative Clauses

The Wisdom Institute of Democracy and Human Rights, meeting in the House of Lords:

Condemns all forms of weaponized censorship employed by state authorities, armed groups, or private entities to silence marginalized communities, distort public discourse, or conceal human rights abuses, with particular concern for the systemic suppression of Palestinian voices and documentation;

Calls Upon all Member States to immediately halt the misuse of national security, public order, or counter-extremism justifications to implement internet shutdowns, block digital platforms, or impose vague, sweeping regulations designed to intimidate journalists, restrict civic participation, or criminalize dissent;

Urges social media companies, digital service providers, and technology firms to undertake comprehensive reforms of content moderation systems, ensuring transparency, impartiality, accountability, and full alignment with international human rights standards—especially during conflicts, humanitarian crises, and political unrest;

Affirms the indispensable role of independent journalism , civil society organizations, and human rights defenders as frontline guardians of truth, and Demands that all states guarantee their safety and independence, protecting them from surveillance, harassment, arbitrary detention, and online or offline violence;

Pledges to employ the mechanisms and expertise of the Wisdom Institute to monitor, document, and publicly report instances of weaponized censorship worldwide, beginning with the regions identified in the accompanying analysis, and to provide legal, advocacy, and technical support to individuals and organizations targeted by such practices;

Resolves to collaborate with intergovernmental institutions, parliamentary bodies, academic networks, and civil society partners to advance the creation of a Global Charter on Digital Freedom and Accountability, establishing binding principles for responsible content governance, prohibiting the use of digital technologies for repression, and strengthening international protections for free expression.

Adopted unanimously this 27th Day of November, 2025.
