Poverty Facts

Check out these 10 poverty facts to become more aware.

1. One-third of the world’s food is wasted every year. But if just 25{5d21ca8f3af2f37b0bc16927eb571d1ae99c4ba19a2ec08b589c9cc4ef87832d} of all that wasted food across the globe could be recovered, it would be sufficient to feed all the approximately 680 million undernourished people in the world, as well as many more people living in poverty too.

2. To provide water and sanitation for all would cost about $9 billion each year, whereas $11 billion is spent annually on ice cream in Europe, as well as $50 billion each year on cigarettes in the same region.

3. Infectious diseases continue to blight the lives of the poor across the world. An estimated 38 million people are living with HIV/AIDS (including about 1.8 million children).  There were 690,000 deaths in 2019 and 1.7 million newly infected people that year.

4. Some 880 million people live in slums, and one projection suggests this could grow to 1.2 billion people living in slums by 2030.

5. Food loss occurs mainly on farms in poor countries, not in consumers’ homes. About 30 {5d21ca8f3af2f37b0bc16927eb571d1ae99c4ba19a2ec08b589c9cc4ef87832d} of harvested crops in sub‑Saharan Africa are lost before reaching markets, often due to lack of storage or transport.
