1. Since 2008, weather-related disasters — events that are increasingly intensified by climate change — have collectively displaced tens of millions of people each year. Long-term monitoring by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) shows that between 2008 and recent years there have been on average roughly 20–25 million new internal displacements annually due to disasters, the vast majority tied to weather-related hazards such as floods and storms. Over the past decade and a half, using those long-term averages, this amounts to an estimated hundreds of millions of new internal displacements globally, driven largely by extreme weather events exacerbated by the climate crisis.
