Eco Tips

Check out these 10 eco-tips to be more ‘green’.

1. Use mesh produce bags at the grocery store.

Why mesh produce bags are a smart upgrade

  • Reusable alternative: They replace dozens of flimsy single‑use plastic produce bags.
  • Lightweight and breathable: Keeps fruits and vegetables fresher by preventing trapped moisture.
  • Machine‑washable: Toss them in with your laundry and they’re ready to go again.
  • Stronger than plastic: No tearing, no splitting, no juggling loose apples.
  • Easy to see through: Cashiers can scan produce without removing it.

🍎 What they’re great for

  • Loose fruits and vegetables
  • Bulk nuts, grains, and beans
  • Storing produce at home
  • Organising items in your bag or fridge

⚠️ When they’re not ideal

  • Very wet produce — moisture can drip through.
  • Fine powders or tiny grains — they’ll escape through the mesh.
  • Raw meat or fish — not food‑safe for that purpose.

🧼 How to care for them

  • Wash in cold or warm water
  • Air‑dry to preserve the mesh
  • Store them inside your main shopping bags so you never forget them

2.

Keep Your Fridge Away From The Wall.
Aim to keep your fridge more than 5cm from the wall and leave space on either side to keep vents free and air flowing.

3. Grow herbs on windowsills.

Growing herbs on a windowsill is one of the easiest, most rewarding ways to save money, reduce waste, and always have fresh flavour on hand 🌿☀️
Here’s how to do it successfully.

🌱 Best Herbs for Windowsills

These do well indoors with limited space:

Easy & hardy

  • Basil (needs warmth and light)

  • Mint (very forgiving, keep in its own pot)

  • Chives

  • Parsley

  • Coriander (cooler rooms are better)

Woody herbs (need more light)

  • Rosemary

  • Thyme

  • Oregano

🪟 Light & Position

  • South- or west-facing windows are ideal

  • Minimum 4–6 hours of sunlight per day

  • Rotate pots weekly so plants grow evenly

💡 If light is poor, herbs like parsley and chives cope better.

🪴 Pots & Soil

  • Use pots with drainage holes

  • Add a small layer of gravel or crocks at the bottom

  • Use light, well-draining compost (herb or multipurpose)

💧 Watering Tips

  • Water when the top soil feels dry

  • Avoid overwatering (most herbs hate soggy roots)

  • Let excess water drain fully

💡 Basil likes more water; rosemary and thyme prefer it drier.

✂️ Harvesting for Growth

  • Snip little and often (never more than ⅓ of the plant)

  • Cut above a leaf joint to encourage bushier growth

  • Remove flowers to keep leaves flavourful

🌍 Benefits

  • Fresher than shop-bought

  • No plastic packaging

  • Saves money over time

  • Improves air quality slightly

  • Adds greenery to your space

🔁 Extra Tips

  • Start from seed or small plants

  • Keep mint separate — it spreads aggressively

  • Don’t crowd pots; airflow prevents disease

💡 Pro Tip: If you cook often, grow the 3 herbs you use most instead of many you’ll forget to harvest.

4.

Use “shower playlists” — save water and time without thinking.

A 4-minute curated playlist means you automatically cut shower time (and heating bills).
This saves:

  • thousands of litres of water

  • £50–£120 a year

5.

Buy Local To Guarantee Freshness.
If you’re eating out-of-season, the answer’s probably red and sweet. On average, food travels between 1,500 to 2,500 miles from the farm to your fork. Buy local, in-season produce for the freshest, most eco-friendly options.
Out-of-season fruits and veggies shipped from outside the country travel up to 2 weeks before they arrive in the grocery store.
A California tomato sold in New York, for example, has travelled about 2,800 miles and the truck transporting it produces more than 3,100 lbs of CO2 getting it there.
