1. In sub-Saharan Africa, 59 million children between the ages of 5 and 17 work instead of playing and going to school. They fight poverty for their families. In Africa, every fifth child is cheated out of childhood and forced into child labour.

2. Indoor air pollution resulting from the use of solid fuels [by poorer segments of society] is a major killer. It claims the lives of 1.5 million people each year, more than half of them below the age of five: that is 4000 deaths a day. To put this number in context, it exceeds total deaths from malaria and rivals the number of deaths from tuberculosis.

3. Remittances: Money sent by migrants to their home countries totals over $500 billion annually, often lifting families out of poverty (World Bank). 

4. In 2023, about 546 children under the age of five died every hour, but many of those could have survived via simple affordable intervention, such as clean drinking water or vaccinations.

5. Children living in conflict- or disaster-affected areas are at significantly greater risk of being pushed into child labour or hazardous work, due to poverty, displacement, breakdown of protective systems, and disruption of education.
